Luther and the Jews | A forthcoming book by Richard Harvey to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation
Dr. Richard Harvey asks what the Lutheran Churches are doing about “Luther’s shocking anti-Jewish teaching – his violent rhetoric in ‘Against the Jews and their Lies’ and many other writings, calling for the Jewish people to be expelled from Germany, their books burned and their synagogues destroyed.” Harvey also points out that, “Luther’s writings had been used over the centuries to stir up anti-Jewish feelings, and Hitler had used Luther’s writings, which the Nazi party reprinted to argue for the “Final Solution” the extermination of the Jewish people in the Concentration Camps between 1939-1945.”
On the positive side, Harvey offers hope:
The book concludes by proposing some practical activities that Christians, Jews and Messianic Jews can do to make the 500th anniversary of Luther a time of healing, restoration of relationships, and working to union and re-union of churches and nations. There is a need not only for reconciliation between Protestants and Catholics, but also between Israelis and Palestinians, and only a deeper understanding of the reconciling love of Jesus can make this happen. I look at the examples of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and others who were willing to die for their faith as they resisted evil, with the encouragement to follow in their footsteps, whatever the cost.
Dr. Harvey envisions “what such reconciliation really looks like – can the children of Concentration Camp guards weep and rejoice with the children of those who lost their parents in the camps? And will the grandchildren of Israelis and Palestinians play safely in the streets of Jerusalem, Hebron and Tel Aviv?”
And he outlines his book for us, “The book follows an order which looks at the history first, then some of the theology, and looks forward with a prophetic vision to hopes for the future, giving a call to repentance. I did not write it because I wanted it to be easy reading, but because it needs to be read and responded to. I pray it will be a challenge, blessing and encouragement to you.”

El libro concluye proponiendo algunas actividades prácticas que los cristianos , Judios y Judios mesiánicos pueden hacer para que el 500 aniversario de Luther un tiempo de curación , la restauración de las relaciones y de trabajo a la unión y la re- unión de iglesias y naciones.
